Playoff Results and How Each Team Qualified

Bengaluru’s route to the playoffs was the story of the league phase. They won one of their first eight matches, then won their last six in a row, the final win over Chennai on 18 May knocking Chennai out on net run rate and sending Bengaluru through in fourth place. Mumbai, in Hardik Pandya’s first season back as captain, finished bottom with four wins. Kolkata’s run through the knockouts was the most one-sided in IPL history. Mitchell Starc, bought for a record price at the auction, saved his best for last: he was player of the match in both Qualifier 1 and the final, and on both nights the Sunrisers top order collapsed against him with the new ball. Sunrisers had reached the final only by beating Rajasthan in Qualifier 2 in Chennai, where their part-time spinners, led by Shahbaz Ahmed, strangled a chase of 176. Rajasthan had earlier ended Bengaluru’s six-match winning streak in the Eliminator. The final itself was over before the Chennai crowd had settled: Sunrisers’ 113 is the lowest total in an IPL final, and Kolkata knocked the runs off in 63 balls to win their third title, ten years after their second.
