What This Record Measures and Why It Is Hard

The record is the most runs scored by a team in one IPL innings. For the first 15 seasons, 250 was reached only a handful of times; since the Impact Player rule arrived in 2023, giving teams an extra batter, totals of 250 and more have become far more common.

The closest current challenger is Sunrisers Hyderabad, with Sunrisers Hyderabad 287/3 in 2024. Scoring rates in the IPL have risen sharply since 2023, so records like this are under more pressure than ever.

The Story Behind the Record

The record stood still for eleven years. Bengaluru’s 263/5 against Pune Warriors in 2013, the night of Chris Gayle’s 175*, was the highest IPL total until 27 March 2024, when Sunrisers Hyderabad made 277/3 against Mumbai. Less than three weeks later, on 15 April, Sunrisers beat their own record with 287/3 against Bengaluru at the Chinnaswamy, Travis Head making 102 off 41 balls. Bengaluru replied with 262/7, and that match produced 549 runs, the most in any IPL game at the time.

Sunrisers own seven of the top 20 totals, and four of the top four. Their approach since 2024, with Head and Abhishek Sharma attacking from the first ball, changed what teams think is a winning score. Delhi’s 264/2 against Punjab in 2026 is the highest total ever to lose an IPL match, beaten by Punjab’s chase of 265 in the same game. Of the 18 totals of 250 or more in IPL history, only one, Bengaluru’s 263 in 2013, came before 2023. Bengaluru are also on the other side of the record more than anyone: they conceded the 287 and have made five of the top 20 totals themselves, three of them since 2024. Kolkata’s 272/7 against Delhi in Visakhapatnam on 3 April 2024 is the highest total by any team other than Sunrisers.
