What This Record Measures and Why It Is Hard
A successful run chase is ranked by the target set. Chasing 200 used to be a rare event in the IPL; since 2023 it has happened regularly, and the biggest chases now go well beyond that. Each needs top-order hitting, a steady required rate and nerve at the finish.

The Story Behind the Record
For twelve years the record barely moved. Rajasthan Royals’ chase of 215 against Deccan Chargers in the first season stood until 2020, when Rajasthan themselves beat it, chasing 224 against Kings XI Punjab in Sharjah, a game remembered for Rahul Tewatia hitting five sixes in one over after a painfully slow start. Since 2024 Punjab have raised it twice, first by 38 runs and then by three more.
Punjab’s chase of 262 at Eden Gardens in 2024, built around Jonny Bairstow’s unbeaten 108, made the old benchmarks look small, and in 2026 they went one better, reaching 265 against Delhi with seven balls to spare after Prabhsimran Singh made 76 off 26 balls. Fifteen of the top 20 chases have come since the start of 2024, and ten in 2026 alone, including Gujarat’s chase of 215 against Rajasthan in Qualifier 2. This list counts only chases of a full target; rain-revised targets, such as Chennai’s 171 in 15 overs in the 2023 final, are left out because the target was not the score the other side made.
