Updated October 2026 | All stats are as of the end of IPL 2026 (final played 31 May 2026).
IPL hat-trick list: There have been 24 hat-tricks in IPL history, taken by 20 different bowlers. Amit Mishra holds the record with three (2008, 2011 and 2013), and Yuvraj Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal have two each. The first was taken by Lakshmipathy Balaji for Chennai Super Kings against Kings XI Punjab on 10 May 2008, and the most recent by Chahal for Punjab Kings against Chennai on 30 April 2025.
A hat-trick is three wickets with three consecutive legal deliveries by the same bowler in the same match. The balls can be spread across two overs, or even two spells, as long as the bowler sends down nothing else in between. Run-outs do not count because the bowler is not credited with them.
What This Record Measures and Why It Is Hard
In Twenty20 cricket a bowler has only 24 legal balls a match. Taking three wickets in a row requires a batting side to keep losing wickets at the moment it is trying to rebuild, and a captain to keep the bowler on long enough. Across 1254 IPL matches, a hat-trick has happened about once every 52 games. Many of them came at the end of an innings, when tail-enders were swinging at everything, but several, like Shreyas Gopal’s in 2019, removed top-order batters.
Some hat-tricks are spread across two overs: the bowler takes a wicket with the last ball of one over and the first two balls of his next. These count in exactly the same way. In our count, a wide or no-ball between the three wickets does not break the sequence, since it is not a legal delivery, but any legal ball without a wicket does.

Who Holds It Now and How It Was Set
Amit Mishra, the Delhi, Deccan, Sunrisers and Lucknow leg-spinner, is the only bowler with three IPL hat-tricks, and he took them for three different franchises. The first came for Delhi Daredevils against Deccan Chargers on 15 May 2008, when he removed Ravi Teja, Pragyan Ojha and RP Singh. The second was for Deccan against Kings XI Punjab in 2011, and the third for Sunrisers against Pune Warriors on 17 April 2013, when he took the last three wickets to defend a small total.
Mishra finished his IPL career with 174 wickets, still among the top ten of all time. That his record of three has stood for more than a decade shows how rare these spells are.
How the Record Has Changed Hands Over the Years
- 10 May 2008: L Balaji takes the first IPL hat-trick, for Chennai against Kings XI Punjab.
- 15 May 2008: Amit Mishra takes the second, for Delhi.
- 17 May 2009: Yuvraj Singh becomes the first bowler with two, both in 2009 for Kings XI Punjab, against Royal Challengers and Deccan Chargers. He is still the only player with two in a single season.
- 21 May 2011: Mishra draws level with Yuvraj on two, for Deccan Chargers.
- 17 April 2013: Mishra takes his third, for Sunrisers Hyderabad, and the outright record that still stands.
- 30 April 2025: Yuzvendra Chahal takes his second, for Punjab Kings against Chennai, to move level with Yuvraj in second place.

The busiest seasons were 2008, 2009, 2017, with 3 each. 4 seasons, including 2026, passed without one. 2017 had two on the same day, 14 April, when Samuel Badree took one for Royal Challengers against Mumbai and Andrew Tye for Gujarat Lions against Rising Pune Supergiant.
Active Players Closest to Breaking It
| Bowler | Hat-tricks | Career wickets |
|---|---|---|
| Yuzvendra Chahal | 2 | 233 |
| Rohit Sharma | 1 | 15 |
| Sunil Narine | 1 | 207 |
| Axar Patel | 1 | 139 |
| Jaydev Unadkat | 1 | 114 |
| Kagiso Rabada | 1 | 148 |
| Harshal Patel | 1 | 151 |
| Rashid Khan | 1 | 179 |
These are the hat-trick takers who played in IPL 2026. Yuzvendra Chahal, on two, is the only active bowler one away from equalling Mishra and two from breaking the record. As the league’s leading wicket-taker and a leg-spinner who bowls at the end of innings, he is the most likely candidate.
